Jätkäsaari mini meadow

A nice urban mini meadow has sprung up at the entrance to Jätkäsaari district in Helsinki. There is surprisingly rich flora growing in the barren soil between the sidewalk and a bike path. It’s really nice to see at least a glimpse of wild nature in the concrete jungle of Jätkäsaari. Hopefully the city will let the mini meadow flourish.

The Return of the Rapids – Kuohujen paluu

[one_half]Wild Zone NGO and Mieluisa published a proposal for the development of Tammerkoski rapids in Tampere, Finland. In the proposal, the dams of the hydroelectric power plants will be demolished and the beautiful roaring rapids of the past will return. This way we can create a truly remarkable attraction where recreational activities connect with wild nature and national landscapes. The proposal (in Finnish, English version available on demand) can be downloaded here : Kuohujen paluu (PDF) The renderings  (4000 px): Day (JPG) Night (JPG) More information: Wild Zone NGO[/one_half][one_half_last]Villi vyöhyke ry. ja Mieluisa julkaisivat tulevaisuudenkuvan Tampereen Tammerkosken kehittämisestä. Ehdotuksessa Tammerkosken voimalaitoksien padot puretaan ja virta vapautetaan jälleen ryöppyäväksi ja kuohuvaksi koskeksi. Näin luodaan kansainvälisen tason vetonaula, jossa yhdistyvät monipuoliset harrastusmahdollisuudet, villi luonto ja kansallismaisema. Ehdotus on ladattavissa tästä: Kuohujen paluu – Tulevaisuudenkuva Tammerkosken kuohujen vapauttamisesta (PDF) Havainnekuvat (4000 px): Päivä (JPG) Yö (JPG) Lisätietoa: Villi Vyöhyke[/one_half_last]

Help to make the + POOL a reality

The brilliant + POOL project has launched a Kickstarter Campaign take the NYC’s coolest future swimming spot one step closer to reality. The team is asking for your help to be able to build a 35′ x 35′ (11 x 11 m) Float Lab on the East River this August. They want to test the water filtration technologies that they would use in the floating pool. The kickstarter campaign is called Tile by Tile: To make the donations more interesting, you can buy yourself a tile, with a personal engraving, that will actually end up being a part of the final + POOL slated to open in 2016. So essentially you are buying yourself a piece of a giant swimming pool in a premium location while also helping to clean up our environment. Check out more information on the campaign page and pledge to make this ingenious project become reality.

A lush roof garden on a kiosk

We spotted this lush rooftop garden by Biolan at Kolmen Sepän Aukio in Helsinki. There appears to be a nice array of useful plants growing on small the roof of the kiosk. Wish there were more roof gardens like this in Finland. Do you know who will harvest the crop of this garden?
